Hannah Nissan: Forecasting Climate to Help Save Lives

Seasonal flooding in Bangladesh can hurt crop yields and ultimately affect child nutrition in the following year. So better forecasts of rainfall might give local officials a chance to anticipate problems and prepare. So, too, with heat waves, which can be deadly unless people have ready ways to cope. Hannah Nissan, a postdoctoral research scientist at the International Research Institute for Climate and Society, studies these issues and tries to come up with models that will improve the seasonal forecasting of climate.
